The Application Of Communication Accommodation Theory To Understand Cultural Communication Within Asean Organization
Globalization has impacted the possibility of communication with people on a global scale, regardless of their nationality and cultural differences. The result from this is the existence of organizations that comprise people from multiple cultures, working together towards a main goal in an organization. An example of this is the ASEAN organization that exists in Jakarta, Indonesia, that has become a hub of cross-cultural collaborations of Southeast Asian people, including Indonesian natives. However, communication gap arises when people from different backgrounds have different levels of communication and understanding, particularly using English as the main language. This research uses qualitative methods with in-depth interviews and informants by a constructivist paradigm. Using communication accommodation theory, the research aims to seek and understand the reason behind the communication gap that occurs within the ASEAN organization and how communication is adapted within the ASEAN organization through extensive communication adaptation both verbally and nonverbally within the working conversation in the multicultural setting.Through the research, it can be concluded that convergence plays an important part in influencing understanding and decision making from the hierarchical line of communication from upper management to lower management, combining various efforts to enhance the communication understanding. However, a lack of communication also occurs from lower to upper management and that improvements need to be made to minimize the lack in communication.
