The Discrepancy of Human Rights in the United States: Anti-Asian Racism as a Form of Human Rights Violation in the Times of COVID-19
The acknowledgment of the United States as a country renowned for freedom and liberty, and as a pioneer of human rights, collides with the real-life experiences faced by Asians from history to the present, such as racism, xenophobia, and discrimination. Since the inception of COVID-19, Asians have been stereotyped as carriers of diseases or responsible for societal problems. These issues were exacerbated by the hateful statement of Donald Trump, who referred to the "coronavirus" as the "Chinese virus," thereby increasing racism significantly. In response, President Joe Biden, the Chinese government, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community groups such as Stop AAPI Hate and Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) have taken actions to prevent further exacerbation of racism and to condemn these acts. Additionally, many people have taken to social media platforms like Twitter to combat racism, using hashtags such as #StopAAPIHate and #StopAsianHate to raise awareness and show solidarity. This study aims to analyze the discrepancy of human rights in the United States, focusing on anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using qualitative research methods based on the human rights concept and racism as a derivative concept of human rights, this study employed in-depth interviews and document studies as data collection techniques. The findings indicate that COVID-19 has exacerbated anti-Asian racism, leading to worsened challenges and consequences borne by Asians.
