Popular Culture: Contemporary Media for Social Empowerment among Youth
With the rising urgency of environmental concerns, there is a crucial need for a creative strategy to addressing the issue, particularly towards the younger generations who are the society’s primary agents of change. As social media becoming vastly embedded into our daily lives, it has not only served as a platform for social interaction but also greatly impacted the way the larger society functions and fashioned our understandings and perceptions of the world. It appears that no other topics of discussion receive greater attention on social media than pop culture, especially music and film. With the global appeals of social media and pop culture, the author argued that the use of both to communicate environmental messages could result in a higher sense of awareness and empowerment in environmental efforts among youth. Through conducting an online survey and literature review, this qualitative study has determined a few factors on the song “Earth” and the movie “Don’t Look Up” as forms of pop culture, that could impact youth’s perception and attitude towards environmental issues. The findings can be used as a reference or suggestion to those interested in exploring the topics.
