"LOVE, MARRIAGE, AND THE BABY CARRIAGE: RESEARCHING THE COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS EXPERIENCED BY COUPLES WITH ATYPICAL MARRIAGE SEQUENCES"
Marriage is considered one of the greatest bonds between twoindividuals. The closer individuals are, the more conflicts are likely to occur. As communication problems in marriage are inevitable, there are certainthings that can differentiate the level of problems experienced betweencouples. One of them is the marriage sequence. In this research, there aretwo marriage sequences used which are typical and atypical marriagesequences. These sequences are determined by childbearing timing; beforeor after marriage. Considering the culture in Indonesia, which sees premaritalpregnancy as immoral, atypical sequenced couples are expected to have amore intense level of conflicts compared to typical sequenced couples due tothe pressure to marry. Therefore, this study aims to find out howcommunication problems are differently experienced by these twosequences. 6 couples (3 from each sequence) and a marriage counselorwere interviewed semi structurally to gain insights. This study uses qualitativeresearch methods to obtain data from interviews. The findings demonstratehow both sequences face the same difficulties in communicating but atypicalsequences seemed to have more difficulties in conflict resolution. In addition,it was found that all typical sequenced couples had premarital counselingwhich made them more prepared in handling conflicts. It is encouraged forfuture researchers to study this further on a larger scale with couples from adifferent society as well as the impact of premarital counseling on marriagecommunication.
