NEGOTIATION OF GENDER AND INTELLIGENCE; HOW FEMALE ENGINEERS IN INDONESIA DO THESE THINGS IN THE MALE DOMINATED ENGINEERING WORLD
Female has always been a minority in the civil engineering field anywhere in the world. This is no exception in Indonesia, where the atriarchal culture still runs deep in the society. A lot of progress have been made and now female could apply and get inside the field of engineering. Unfortunately, the female engineer as a minority in the civil engineering field still get oppressed and obstructed. Blatant harassment and inaproppriate conduct happens to the female civil engineer all the time. Female civil engineers are also underestimated and overlooked in their workplace. This oppression resulted in the resistance action by the female engineer, in the form of negotiation of gender and intelligence in the civil engineeringworkplace. The negotiation of gender and intelligence causes simultaneuous act of conforming and adapting to the female civil engineer. This qualitativeresearch aims to uncover the gender and intelligence negotiation process of the female civil engineers in their workplace, guided by the Coordinated Management of Meaning Theory and Muted Group Theory. Using datacollected by interviews and literature, the study found that female engineers have to be flexible in their way of communication, in an attempt of answering the various conflicting the gender and professional expectations in the workfield.
