Inapproriate Collocation of the Words "Jihad" and "Terrorism" In media's Reports on Terror Attacks



The thesis concerns the collocation of the word “jihad” with the negative term “terrorism” in journalistic reports on bombing attacks by media. The study explains that the collocation is inappropriate by definition. The study addresses that the inappropriateness could lead tom is conception on Islam in general and jihad as one of the highest teachings in Islam. The study seeks for the collocation of jihad and terrorism in online media on three bombing attacks. The study highlighted the collocation of the two words in various phrases of “jihadi terrorism”, “jihadist terrorists” as well as “jihadi”, “jihadism” and “jihadists” in connection with terror attacks. The study refers to opinions of some researches, experts, and international organizations to explain the definitions of jihad and terrorism. The study finds that the word jihad has positive values both by literal and ideological meanings, and therefore it is argued that the word jihad and “terrorism” which has a negative meaning cannot be collocated. The study emphasizes that such collocation and linking jihad with terrorism could create misperception about the Islamic word. The study provides some guides according to the Ethics Code of Journalism to remind media workers in reporting bombing attacks which involve individuals or groups that claim themselves to have committed “jihad”. The correction on collocating jihad with the word terrorism by media is made by giving media workers understanding of their definitions and guidelines
