In this modern era, internet access is crucial for communication and for education. During the 2021 coup, the military junta has taken over the government of Myanmar and has imposed restrictions and shutdown on the internet over most of the towns in Myanmar. There have also been human rights violations during the internet shutdown. The research examines the impact of internet restrictions and shutdown imposed by the military junta which has contributed to the social changes in Myanmar, as well as how it has personally affected the citizens. This research provides a qualitative methodology by applying Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to examine the articles from The Irrawaddy and Myanmar-Now. The analysis focuses on the textual, discursive practice, and socio-cultural practice, which highlights how the discourse in media constructs the narratives around Myanmar’s internet shutdown and restrictions. Through this research, it was found that independent media outlets have used discourse and framing techniques to challenge the military junta, highlighting the digital suppression and arousing international attention. The findings demonstrated that media discourse has significantly shaped the perception of the public on power dynamics, authoritarian control, and resistance in Myanmar amidst a political crisis.
