Psychological Communication on The Representation of Gender Roles and Stereotypes in The Movie “Singin’ In The Rain” (1952): a Semiotic Analysis

The medium of film plays a significant part in mass communication by effectively conveying messages to viewers. “Singin' in the Rain” (1952) conveys a message regarding the societal perceptions and stereotypes surrounding gender roles. The movie explores how the older society perceives and reinforces these gender norms within its historical context. Through the use of psychological communication, the movie effectively presents a distinct portrayal of gender dynamics, highlighting the influence of entertainment media in shaping societal perspectives. This research examines the historical disparity in societal perceptions of gender. The objective of this study is to gain insight into the societal perception of gender roles and stereotypes, as conveyed through the examination of diverse indicators of psychological communication. The primary subject of investigation in this thesis pertains to a particular scenario within a movie that serves as a representation of gender roles and stereotypes, aligned with the utilisation of four distinct elements. This study implements the semiotic analysis method of Christian Metz inside a qualitative descriptive framework. Data analysis in film studies involves the utilisation of Metz's basic units of film, which encompass the shot, the imaginary signifier, the cinematic signifier, and the psychoanalytic approach. The outcome of this research indicates the representation of gender roles within the movie, wherein females are depicted in alignment with the conventional feminine stereotypes, while males conform to appear manly in accordance with the common masculine portrayals.
