Challenges and Boundaries of Living As A Hispanic Expatriate in Jakarta,Indonesia



Due to globalization, the increased search for knowledge, and international economic development, more and more companies are demanding employees to work in a country other than their own. However, many organizations do not provide adequate preparation prior to overseas assignments leading to a high level of expatriate failure and earlier returns. The population of Hispanics living in Asia is growing, but there is still a lack of knowledge about their nationalities or cultural background. Past studies and academic research are often too broad as they consider all expatriates as virtually the same. This exploratory research will fill this gap by focusing specifically on people originating from Central and South American countries and examining the challenges and adjustment difficulties they face during their assignments overseas. Consequently possible improvements to guarantee a satisfactory experience will also be presented. The research was conducted by using a qualitative methodology, hence, in-depth interviews as well as informal conversational interviews were jointly used as methods of data collection. The findings gathered from the research indicate that companies need to have a design strategy and full involvement both prior and during the expatriation process. Therefore, better mechanisms in relation to cross-cultural training, a good orientation scheme from human resources department, and improved intercultural communication will enhance adaptability and familiarization to the host country environment. By successfully employing the afore-mentioned techniques, organizations will have a higher likelihood of ensuring a successful overseas assignment. Conclusively, the analysis and study of Hispanics in Asia, more specifically in Indonesia, and the consequent findings produced by the study, will allow companies to be better prepared and to employ efficient strategic planning methods in the process of expatriation for their future employees.
